A giant single eye peeks over the hill! What is this lovesick giant thinking?
French artist Odilon Redon painted this late in his life. It shows Polyphemus, a one-eyed giant called a Cyclops from Greek myth. He peeks over a rocky hill covered with purple and pink flowers. On the rocks at the lower right, the sea nymph Galatea lies asleep.
In Ovid's Metamorphoses, the giant Polyphemus falls in love with the beautiful Galatea, but she does not love him. Redon did not make him simply frightening. The giant seems shy as he watches her from far away. The picture glows with jewel-like spots and strokes of color.
Until he was about 50, Redon was known for dreamlike black-and-white works in charcoal and lithography, called his "noirs" (blacks). Later, he moved into a bright world of oil and pastel. This is a major work from his color period. It is now in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands, which dates it to around 1914.
A giant with one eye looks over a hill. He is in love with a sea fairy. She is sleeping on the rocks. The giant seems shy. He only watches her. For many years, Redon made pictures only in black and white!

In 1882, Redon published lithographs dedicated to the writer Edgar Allan Poe. One shows a giant eyeball rising into the sky like a balloon. The eye was a lifelong theme for him, and it returns in this Cyclops.
As a young man, Redon became friends with the botanist Armand Clavaud. Clavaud showed him the tiny world under a microscope. This is said to have inspired the strange creatures in Redon's art.
For many years, Redon worked almost only in black and white. He began using color seriously in the 1890s, when he was around 50. Late in life, his bright paintings of flowers became very popular. His pastel flowers are still loved around the world.
The Kröller-Müller Museum was built on the collection of Helene Kröller-Müller. It is also famous for having one of the world's largest collections of Van Gogh's works.
