フランスのボルドーに生まれました。若いころから50歳ごろまでは、木炭や石版画の白黒の世界で、気球になった目玉や笑うクモなど、ふしぎな生きものを描きました。その後とつぜん色あざやかな世界へ移り、パステルや油絵で花や神話の夢を描きます。同じ年に生まれたモネとはまったくちがう、心の中の景色の画家です。
Redon was born in Bordeaux, France. Until about the age of 50, he worked in black and white, in charcoal and lithographs. He drew strange creatures, like an eye floating as a balloon and a smiling spider. Then he suddenly moved into bright color, painting flowers and dreamlike myths in pastel and oil. Born the same year as Monet, he painted the world inside the mind instead.
