A small portrait with blue eyes was stuck in America for over 12 years!
Egon Schiele, an Austrian painter, painted this small portrait in 1912. A woman with red-brown hair tilts her head and looks at us with big blue eyes. She wears a black dress with a white collar, and on the right there is a branch with red berries. The model, Wally Neuzil, posed for Schiele and was his partner for several years.
Wally is said to have been a model for Klimt, the artist Schiele admired. This portrait was made as a pair with Schiele's 'Self-Portrait with Physalis' from the same year. Today the two hang side by side in the Leopold Museum in Vienna. The thick white background on a wooden panel and the sharp lines are typical of Schiele.
In 1915, Schiele married another woman, and he and Wally parted. During the First World War, Wally worked as a nurse, and she died of an illness in 1917. Schiele died of the Spanish flu the next year, in 1918, at the age of 28. Today this small picture still hangs beside his self-portrait, as if remembering their short lives.
This is Wally. She has big blue eyes. Schiele painted her in 1912. The Nazis took this painting. Later it was stuck in New York for many years. In 2010, it went home to Vienna.

By 1925, this painting belonged to Lea Bondi Jaray, a Jewish art dealer who ran a gallery in Vienna. In 1939, shortly before she fled to England, the Nazi Party member and art dealer Friedrich Welz forced her to hand it over. That was the start of a long fight.
In 1997 and 1998, the painting was lent to a Schiele exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In January 1998, when the show ended, New York authorities seized it after Bondi Jaray's family made a claim. It could not go back to Vienna.
The legal fight lasted more than 12 years. In July 2010, the Leopold Museum agreed to pay the family 19 million dollars. The painting returned to Vienna in August that year. It is now shown with an explanation of its history.
The fight over this painting became an American documentary film, 'Portrait of Wally', in 2012. A small panel only about 32 by 40 centimeters became a huge case involving countries, museums and a family.
