Schiele was born in Tulln, near Vienna. At 16, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. At 17, he met Klimt, who saw his talent. With sharp, nervous lines and twisted poses, he showed people's anxiety and energy. He also made many self-portraits. In 1918, he died of the Spanish flu at 28, just three days after his wife.
Schiele greatly admired Klimt. When he offered to trade drawings, Klimt is said to have replied, 'Why do you want to swap with me? You draw better than I do.'
