この作品のお話
Storyオーストリアの画家エゴン・シーレが、22歳の1912年に描いた自画像です。黒い服のシーレが少し首をかしげ、横目でこちらをじっと見ています。左には、赤いほおずきの実をつけた細い枝。白っぽい背景の中で、黒い服と赤い実がとても強くひびき合っています。
Egon Schiele painted this self-portrait in 1912, when he was 22. Wearing black, he tilts his head and looks at us from the side. On the left is a thin branch with red Chinese lantern fruits, or physalis. Against the pale background, the black clothes and red fruits stand out strongly.
シーレは10代でクリムトに才能を認められ、ウィーンで若くして注目を集めました。顔には青・赤・緑などの色が細かく重ねられ、ゆがんだような線が、内面の緊張を伝えます。レオポルド美術館によると、この絵は同じころに描かれた恋人ヴァリ・ノイツィルの肖像と対になるように考えられ、左右非対称の構図になっています。
As a teenager, Schiele was noticed by Klimt, and he soon became known in Vienna. His face is built from small touches of blue, red and green. The tense, twisting lines show his inner feelings. According to the Leopold Museum, this work was planned as a partner to his portrait of Wally Neuzil, painted at the same time. That is why the composition is not symmetrical.
シーレは1918年、スペインかぜで28歳の若さで亡くなりました。妻エーディトが同じ病で亡くなった3日後のことでした。この絵は、シーレ作品の世界最大級のコレクションをもつウィーンのレオポルド美術館にあり、ヴァリの肖像と並べて展示されることもあります。
In 1918, Schiele died of the Spanish flu at only 28, three days after his wife, Edith, died of the same illness. This painting is in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, which has one of the largest Schiele collections in the world. It is sometimes shown side by side with Wally's portrait.
これはエゴン・シーレです。22歳のとき、自分を描きました。目を見てください！横目でこちらを見ています。赤い実はほおずきです。日本の人にもおなじみの植物ですね。

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets対になる「ヴァリの肖像」は1997〜98年にニューヨーク近代美術館へ貸し出された際、ナチス時代に奪われた絵だという訴えで差し押さえられました。解決したのは2010年。和解金を払って、ウィーンに戻りました。
Its partner, Portrait of Wally, was lent to MoMA in New York in 1997–98. It was seized there because of a claim that it had been taken in the Nazi era. The case ended in 2010 with a settlement payment, and the painting returned to Vienna.
師とあおいだクリムトは1918年2月に、シーレは同じ年の10月に亡くなりました。ウィーンの美術の黄金時代は、この1年で大きな柱を2本失ったのです。シーレは、亡くなったクリムトの姿をスケッチに残しています。
Klimt, Schiele's hero, died in February 1918. Schiele died in October of the same year. Vienna lost two of its greatest artists in one year. Schiele made drawings of Klimt after his death.
赤いほおずきは、日本でも夏の「ほおずき市」やお盆のかざりでおなじみの植物です。英語では、ちょうちんのような形から Chinese lantern plant（中国のちょうちん草）ともよばれます。
In Japan, red physalis is a familiar summer plant, sold at hozuki markets and used for Obon decorations. In English, it is also called the Chinese lantern plant because of its lantern shape.
この絵を集めたのは、眼科医ルドルフ・レオポルド。若いころからシーレにほれこみ、数十年かけて集めた作品が、2001年開館のレオポルド美術館になりました。館内には、クリムトやココシュカの作品もあります。
The collector was Rudolf Leopold, an eye doctor. He loved Schiele from a young age and collected his works for decades. His collection became the Leopold Museum, which opened in 2001. The museum also has works by Klimt and Kokoschka.
