This is Egon Schiele. He painted himself at age 22. Look at his eyes! He is looking at us from the side. The red fruits are physalis. People in Japan know this plant well, too.

Egon Schiele painted this self-portrait in 1912, when he was 22. Wearing black, he tilts his head and looks at us from the side. On the left is a thin branch with red Chinese lantern fruits, or physalis. Against the pale background, the black clothes and red fruits stand out strongly.

🦉 Fun Fact! Its partner, Portrait of Wally, was lent to MoMA in New York in 1997–98. It was seized there because of a claim that it had been taken in the Nazi era. The case ended in 2010 with a settlement payment, and the painting returned to Vienna.
