この作品のお話
Story1897年、アンリ・ルソーが描いた絵です。月の明るい夜、砂漠の上で、しま模様の服を着た女性がぐっすり眠っています。そばにはマンドリンと水差し。そこへ大きなライオンが近づき、においをかいでいます。でも女性は気づきません。夢の中のような、ふしぎに静かな場面です。ニューヨーク近代美術館（MoMA）にあります。
Henri Rousseau painted this in 1897. On a bright moonlit night, a woman in a striped robe is fast asleep in the desert. Next to her are a mandolin and a water jar. A big lion comes close and sniffs her, but she does not notice. It is a strangely quiet scene, like a dream. It is in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
ルソーはパリの入市税関（町に持ちこむ品物に税金をかける役所）で働きながら、独学で絵を学んだ画家です。そのため「税関吏ルソー」と呼ばれました。遠近法や体のつり合いはふつうの写実的な絵とはちがいますが、くっきりした形と澄んだ色が、見る人を夢の世界に引きこみます。ルソー自身は、ライオンは通りがかりに女性のにおいをかぐが食べはしない、と説明しています。
Rousseau worked at the Paris toll office, which taxed goods coming into the city, and taught himself to paint. That is why he was called 'Le Douanier' (the customs officer). His perspective and figures are not realistic in the usual way, but the clear shapes and pure colours pull us into a dream world. Rousseau himself explained that the lion, passing by, smells the woman but does not eat her.
ルソーはこの絵をふるさとラヴァルの市長に買ってもらおうとしましたが、ことわられました。その後、絵は長く行方が分からなくなり、1920年代に再び見つかります。あまり知られていなかったため、にせものではと疑う声も出ました。1939年に寄贈されてMoMAのものとなり、今では同館を代表する人気作です。
Rousseau tried to sell this painting to the mayor of his hometown, Laval, but was turned down. Then it disappeared for many years and was found again in the 1920s. Because so few people knew it, some even thought it was a fake. In 1939, it was given to MoMA, and today it is one of the museum's most popular works.

A woman is sleeping in the desert at night. A big lion comes near her. Is she in danger? No! The painter said the lion only smells her. The moon is bright, and the night is very quiet.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsルソーはふるさとラヴァルの市長に手紙を書き、この絵を町で買ってほしいとたのみました。しかし答えはノー。もし買っていたら、今ごろラヴァルは世界的な名画のある町になっていたかもしれません。
Rousseau wrote to the mayor of his hometown, Laval, asking the town to buy this painting. The answer was no. If they had said yes, Laval would now have a world-famous masterpiece!
長い間行方不明だったこの絵が1920年代に現れると、それまでほとんど知られていなかったため、ほかの人が描いたにせものではないかと疑われたことがありました。今ではルソー本人の作品と認められています。
When this lost painting appeared again in the 1920s, few people had heard of it, so some suspected it was a fake made by someone else. Today it is accepted as Rousseau's own work.
女性もライオンも砂漠にいるのに、砂には足あとが見当たりません。女性はどうやってここまで来たのでしょう。この「足あとのなさ」も、絵が夢のように見える理由の一つだといわれます。
The woman and the lion are in the desert, but there are no footprints in the sand. How did she get here? This is said to be one reason the picture feels like a dream.
素朴な絵を笑われることの多かったルソーですが、若い画家たちには尊敬されました。1908年には、ピカソが自分のアトリエでルソーのための宴会を開いたことがよく知られています。
Many people laughed at Rousseau's simple style, but young artists admired him. In 1908, Picasso famously held a banquet in Rousseau's honour at his studio.
