この作品のお話
Story黄色く燃える空の下、ねじれた幹のオリーブの木々が並んでいます。奥には青い山々、空には大きな太陽。描いたのはオランダ出身の画家フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ。1889年、南フランス・サン＝レミの療養院にいたころの作品で、今はアメリカのミネアポリス美術館にあります。
Under a burning yellow sky, olive trees with twisted trunks stand together. Blue mountains rise in the distance, and a big sun shines in the sky. Van Gogh painted this in 1889, while he was staying at a hospital in Saint-Rémy in the south of France. It is now in the Minneapolis Institute of Art in the United States.
療養院のまわりには、オリーブ畑が広がっていました。ゴッホは1889年の6月から12月にかけて、オリーブの木を15点ほどの油絵に描いています。季節や時間で変わる葉の色や光を、くり返し描き分けました。この絵の、太陽を中心にうずを巻く空と、黄色やオレンジの大地は、秋の光を思わせます。
There were olive groves around the hospital. Between June and December 1889, Van Gogh painted about fifteen pictures of olive trees. He painted them again and again to show how the leaves and the light changed with the season and the time of day. In this one, the sky swirls around the sun, and the yellow and orange ground suggests autumn light.
この絵は1951年にミネアポリス美術館のコレクションに入りました。2021年から22年にかけては、アメリカのダラス美術館とアムステルダムのゴッホ美術館で、オリーブの絵だけを集めた展覧会が開かれ、ゴッホにとってオリーブがどれほど大切な題材だったかが改めて注目されました。
The painting entered the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1951. In 2021 and 2022, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam held an exhibition of his olive tree paintings. It showed again how important olive trees were to Van Gogh.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets同じころ、友人のゴーギャンやベルナールは、キリストがオリーブ山で祈る場面を想像で描きました。ゴッホは手紙でそれに反対し、想像の場面より本物のオリーブの木を見て描くほうがいい、という考えを伝えています。
Around this time, his friends Gauguin and Émile Bernard painted Christ praying in the Garden of Olives from their imagination. In letters, Van Gogh disagreed. He said it was better to paint real olive trees from life.
2017年、アメリカのネルソン・アトキンズ美術館が、所蔵するゴッホのオリーブの絵を調べたところ、絵の具の中に小さなバッタの体がうまっているのが見つかりました。ゴッホが外で描いていたことをうかがわせる発見ですが、バッタだけで描いた場所を証明できるわけではありません。
In 2017, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in the United States studied its own olive tree painting by Van Gogh. Researchers found the body of a tiny grasshopper stuck in the paint. The find fits what we know about his outdoor painting, although the insect alone does not prove where the picture was painted.
木の下の影は、黒ではなく青や紫の短い筆あとで描かれています。黄色やオレンジの地面と、反対の色の青を並べることで、ふりそそぐ日差しの明るさが、いっそう強く感じられるのです。
The shadows under the trees are made of short blue and purple strokes, not black. Placing blue next to the yellow and orange ground makes the sunlight feel even brighter.
ゴッホは手紙で、オリーブ畑のざわめきには、とても古くて、ひみつめいたものがある、という意味のことを書いています。オリーブは何百年も生きる木。ねじれた幹に、長い時間を感じていたのでしょう。
Van Gogh wrote that the rustle of the olive grove had something very secret and immensely old about it. Olive trees can live for hundreds of years. Perhaps their twisted trunks made him feel the passage of centuries.
