Story1889年9月、南フランスのサン＝レミの療養院で、ゴッホが描いた自画像です。青白い背景には、炎か水のようなうずまき模様が一面に広がっています。顔を少しななめに向けたゴッホは、オレンジ色のひげ、かたく結んだ口、するどい目でこちらをじっと見つめています。パリのオルセー美術館にあります。
Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in September 1889 at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, in the south of France. The pale blue background is covered with swirls like flames or water. Van Gogh turns his face slightly to the side and stares at us. His eyes look sharp, his beard is orange, and his lips are tightly closed. It is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
ゴッホは生涯で35点以上の自画像を描きました。とくにパリ時代には、モデル代をはらうお金が少なかったため、鏡の中の自分をくり返し描いたのです。この絵は、ひどい発作から立ち直ったあとに描かれました。服と背景を同じ青緑でまとめたので、ひげと髪のオレンジがいっそう強く燃えるように見えます。
Van Gogh painted more than 35 self-portraits in his life. Especially in Paris, he had little money for models, so he painted himself in the mirror again and again. He made this one after recovering from a serious period of illness. Because his clothes and the background share the same blue-green, his orange hair and beard seem to burn even brighter.
この絵は、ゴッホの最後の自画像の一つと考えられています。のちに医師ガシェの家族が持ち、1949年にガシェの息子と娘がフランスの国に贈りました。そのためオルセー美術館では、『医師ガシェの肖像』などとともに、ガシェ家ゆかりのゴッホ作品を見ることができます。
This is thought to be one of Van Gogh's last self-portraits. Later, it belonged to the family of Dr Gachet, and in 1949 Gachet's son and daughter gave it to the French state. That is why you can see it in the Musée d'Orsay, together with 'Portrait of Dr Gachet' and other works linked to the Gachet family.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsゴッホは鏡を見て自画像を描いたので、絵の左右は実際と逆になります。この絵で見えているのは右耳で、事件で切った左耳は見えない向きになっています。包帯の自画像と見くらべてみると面白いですよ。
Van Gogh painted himself in a mirror, so left and right are reversed. The ear we can see here is his right ear. The left ear, which he had cut, is turned away from us. Try comparing it with his self-portrait with a bandaged ear.
ゴッホの自画像は35点以上残っていて、とくにパリでの2年間に20点以上が描かれました。モデルをやとうお金が少なかったゴッホにとって、鏡の中の自分は、いつでも頼めるモデルだったのです。
More than 35 self-portraits by Van Gogh survive, and over 20 of them were painted in his two years in Paris. He had little money for models, so the man in the mirror was a model he could always use.
オルセー美術館は、じっと動かないゴッホの姿と、波打つ髪やひげ、それをくり返すような背景のうずまき模様との対比を解説しています。この対比から、じっと動かない姿の内側にある緊張や感情を読み取ることもできます。
The Musée d'Orsay points out the contrast between Van Gogh's still pose and the waving hair, beard and swirling background. This contrast may suggest tension or emotion beneath his still pose.
この自画像はガシェ家に伝わり、1949年にガシェの子どもたちがフランスの国に贈りました。同じ年には『医師ガシェの肖像』も贈られ、オルセー美術館のゴッホ・コレクションの大切な柱になっています。
This self-portrait stayed with the Gachet family until 1949, when Gachet's children gave it to the French state. 'Portrait of Dr Gachet' was given in the same year, and both are key works in the Musée d'Orsay's Van Gogh collection.
