In late June 1889, while staying at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted this landscape of a nearby wheat field. Golden wheat moves in the wind, a dark green cypress rises on the right, and blue hills lie in the distance. White clouds swirl in the sky as if they were alive. It was painted shortly after 'The Starry Night' and is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Van Gogh was fascinated by cypresses. He wrote that their lines and proportions were as beautiful as an Egyptian obelisk. He probably painted this outdoors in front of the view, and the paint is very thick. He told his brother Theo that he had painted cypresses, ears of wheat, poppies and 'a blue sky like a piece of Scotch plaid'.
Van Gogh thought this was one of his best summer paintings. In September, in his studio at the hospital, he painted a repetition of almost the same size (now in the National Gallery, London) and a smaller one for his mother and sister. After many owners, this painting came to the Metropolitan Museum in 1993, paid for by Walter Annenberg.
This is a wheat field on a windy day. A tall, dark tree stands on the right. It is a cypress. Van Gogh loved these trees. He said they were as beautiful as an Egyptian obelisk.

Van Gogh painted this view three times in oil. This one was the first, made outdoors. The London picture is a studio repetition, and a smaller one was a gift for his mother and sister. There is also a drawing made with a reed pen.
In a letter to Theo, Van Gogh compared the sky to a piece of Scotch plaid, or tartan. Maybe he saw the swirling clouds as a pattern on cloth.
In 1993, the American publisher Walter Annenberg paid for this painting to go to the Metropolitan Museum. The price was reported to be 57 million dollars. In his lifetime, Van Gogh sold almost none of his paintings.
In Europe, cypress trees grow in graveyards and remind people of death and sadness. But in Van Gogh's painting, the cypress looks full of life, rising like a flame into the sky. In Saint-Rémy, he painted cypresses in many pictures.
