This is Van Gogh. He painted himself in 1889. Look at the background. It is full of swirls! Van Gogh painted more than 35 self-portraits. He did not have much money for models, so he often painted himself.
Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in September 1889 at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, in the south of France. The pale blue background is covered with swirls like flames or water. Van Gogh turns his face slightly to the side and stares at us. His eyes look sharp, his beard is orange, and his lips are tightly closed. It is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
