1890年6月、パリ近くの村オーヴェール＝シュル＝オワーズで、ゴッホが描いた医師ポール・ガシェの肖像です。白いぼうしに青い上着のガシェが、赤いテーブルにひじをつき、ほおづえをついています。テーブルには薬草のジギタリスの花。パリのオルセー美術館にある、2枚目のほうの肖像です。

In June 1890, in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, Van Gogh painted this portrait of the doctor Paul Gachet. Wearing a white cap and a blue jacket, Gachet leans on a red table and rests his head on his hand. On the table lies foxglove, a medicinal plant. This is the second of two versions, and it is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

ガシェは、療養院を出たゴッホを見守ってくれるよう、弟テオが頼んだ医者でした。芸術が大好きで、セザンヌやピサロとも親しく、自分でも版画を作っていました。ゴッホは手紙で、ガシェの顔に「私たちの時代の悲しみにくれた表情」を描きたい、と書いています。そのため、明るい色なのにどこかゆううつな肖像になりました。

Gachet was the doctor Theo asked to look after Van Gogh after he left the hospital. He loved art, was friends with Cézanne and Pissarro, and made prints himself. Van Gogh wrote that he wanted to paint 'the heartbroken expression of our time' in Gachet's face. That is why the portrait feels sad, even with its bright colours.

ゴッホは同じ6月に、この肖像を2枚描きました。1枚目は黄色い本とコップを置いた構図で、1990年に8250万ドルで落札され、世界的なニュースになりました。オルセーにあるこの2枚目は、ガシェの子どもであるポールとマルグリットが、1949年にフランスの国に贈ったものです。この絵を描いた翌月の7月、ゴッホはオーヴェールで亡くなりました。

Van Gogh painted two versions of this portrait that June. The first, with yellow books and a glass, sold for 82.5 million dollars in 1990 and made world news. This second version in the Musée d'Orsay was given to the French state in 1949 by Gachet's children, Paul and Marguerite. The next month, in July, Van Gogh died in Auvers.
