A giant Sunday made of dots. And the lady on the right is walking a monkey!
La Grande Jatte is an island in the Seine, just outside Paris. On a Sunday afternoon, people rest in the shade and take walks. Georges Seurat painted this between 1884 and 1886. It is a huge work, more than three meters wide, and it is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Seurat placed tiny dots and short strokes of color side by side. From a distance, they seem to blend in the viewer's eyes. This method is called pointillism. He studied the science of light and color, visited the island many times and made many sketches. The people look stiff and still, perhaps because he wanted them to feel timeless, like ancient Greek sculpture.
In 1886, this painting was shown at the last Impressionist exhibition and caused a sensation. Seurat died young in 1891, at just 31. The painting came to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1924, and today it is the face of the museum. It has also appeared in musicals and films and is loved around the world.

It is a sunny Sunday in a park. Many people relax by the river. Look closely. The picture has many tiny dots of color! Seurat worked on it for two years. Can you find the monkey?

In 1958, the painting was lent just once, to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. During its stay, a fire broke out in the museum, and the painting was rushed to the Whitney Museum next door. It has never been lent again.
Seurat used a paint called zinc yellow for the sunny grass. But over time this color changed to an ochre-brown, and the change could be seen even in Seurat's lifetime. The grass was once a much brighter yellow than it is today.
Look at the edges of the picture. There is a border made of red, blue and orange dots. Seurat added it in 1888 to 1889, two or three years after he finished, by restretching the canvas and painting on edges that had been hidden around the frame. He thought about color even at the very edge.
The musical 'Sunday in the Park with George' (1984) was based on this painting and won the Pulitzer Prize. In the film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (1986), there is a famous scene where a character stares at the little girl in white in this painting.
