Seurat was born in Paris and studied at the national art school. He studied the science of color. Instead of mixing paints, he placed small dots of pure color side by side, so the colors mix in the viewer's eye. This method is called pointillism. His masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, took about two years and dozens of studies. He died young, at just 31.
