美術館アンテナ：ジョルジュ・スーラの作品に会える展覧会この作品のお話
Storyパリの北西にあるアニエール。夏の日、セーヌ川の岸辺で、若者たちが水浴びをしたり、草の上に寝そべったりしてくつろいでいます。描いたのはジョルジュ・スーラ。24歳のとき、1884年に完成させた最初の大作で、幅は3メートルもあります。今はロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーにあります。
This is Asnières, northwest of Paris. On a summer day, young men bathe in the River Seine or relax on the grass beside it. Georges Seurat finished this painting in 1884, when he was 24. It was his first big work, and it is three meters wide. It is now in the National Gallery in London.
スーラは何度も現地に通い、小さな油絵の下描きやデッサンをたくさん作ってから、アトリエでこの大きな絵を組み立てました。遠くには工場の煙突と、もくもくと上がる煙が見えます。のんびりした休日と、近代の工業の町が、ひとつの画面にならんでいるのです。
Seurat visited the place many times and made many small oil sketches and drawings. Then he put this big picture together in his studio. In the distance, you can see factory chimneys and rising smoke. A lazy holiday and a modern industrial town appear side by side in one picture.
この絵は1884年のサロンに落選し、同じ年に新しく始まった「アンデパンダン展」（審査のない展覧会）に出されました。のちにスーラは、少年の帽子などに点描の点を描き足しています。1924年にイギリスで買い取られ、今はナショナル・ギャラリーの人気作のひとつです。
The Salon rejected this painting in 1884. That same year, it was shown at the new Salon des Indépendants, an exhibition with no jury. Later, Seurat added dots of color to parts of it, such as a boy's hat. It was bought in Britain in 1924 and is now one of the most popular works in the National Gallery.

It is a hot summer day. Young men rest by the river. Some boys stand in the water. Look at the boy in the orange hat. He is calling to someone! Seurat painted this when he was 24.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets右奥の川向こうに見える緑の岸は、グランド・ジャット島です。スーラは次の大作で、その島で休日を過ごす人々を描きました。『アニエールの水浴』と『グランド・ジャット島の日曜日の午後』は、川をはさんで向かい合う2枚なのです。
The green shore across the river on the right is the island of La Grande Jatte. In his next big painting, Seurat showed people spending a Sunday on that island. So 'Bathers at Asnières' and 'A Sunday on La Grande Jatte' face each other across the river.
右の水の中の少年のオレンジ色の帽子をよく見ると、細かい点が重ねられています。これは、スーラが点描の方法を完成させたあと、数年たってから描き足したものです。1枚の絵の中に、画家の進化のあとが残っているのです。
Look closely at the orange hat of the boy in the water on the right. Tiny dots have been added on top. Seurat painted them a few years later, after he had developed his dot method. One picture shows how the artist changed over time.
1884年、サロンに落とされた画家たちが集まり、審査も賞もない「アンデパンダン展」を始めました。スーラのこの絵は、その第1回の目玉のひとつになりました。ここでスーラは、のちに点描の仲間となるシニャックと出会います。
In 1884, artists rejected by the Salon started the Salon des Indépendants, a show with no jury and no prizes. This painting was one of the highlights of the first show. There, Seurat met Paul Signac, who later painted with dots too.
ここで休んでいるのは、上流階級ではなく、近くの工場などで働く若者たちだと考えられています。ぬいだ服やブーツ、帽子がそのしるし。向こう岸のグランド・ジャット島で着かざって散歩する人々とは、対照的な顔ぶれです。
The people relaxing here are thought to be young workers from nearby factories and workshops, not rich people. Their clothes, boots and hats give clues. They are very different from the well-dressed people strolling on La Grande Jatte across the river.
