White dresses dancing in the wind! The 'painter of light' paints his wife and daughter.
Two women in white dresses are walking on a summer beach. The Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla made this picture. The woman in the big hat on the left is his wife, Clotilde, and the woman on the right is their eldest daughter, María. He painted it by the sea in his hometown, Valencia, in the summer of 1909. It is now in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid.
Sorolla was called the 'painter of light,' and he was a master of strong Mediterranean sunshine. He took huge canvases out onto the beach and painted quickly on the spot. The white dresses are not just white. He mixed in blue, purple and yellow to show sunlight and shade. The veil and parasol blowing in the wind add movement.
After Sorolla died in 1923, his wife Clotilde gave their house in Madrid and many of his works to the Spanish state. The house and studio became the Museo Sorolla, and this painting belongs to its collection. His bright pictures of family and the sea are still hugely popular in Spain.

In February and March of the same year, 1909, Sorolla had a show at the Hispanic Society in New York. In about one month, more than 150,000 people came. Together with the tour of other American cities that followed, over 190 of his paintings are said to have been sold.
Later, the Hispanic Society asked Sorolla to paint 'Vision of Spain,' a huge series showing people and places across Spain. Its 14 large canvases are about 70 meters long in total. It took him about eight years to finish.
Clotilde's father was Antonio García, a photographer in Valencia. As a young man, Sorolla worked in his photo studio, and that is where he met Clotilde. Bold, photo-like framing is one of the features of Sorolla's paintings.
In 1920, Sorolla had a stroke while painting a portrait in the garden of his home in Madrid. After that, he could no longer paint. He was cared for by his family until he died three years later. He kept painting until the day of his stroke.
