Paris in the 19th century. In the art world, smooth paintings of history and myth were thought to be 'correct.' Then a group of young painters said, 'We want to paint the light and color in front of our eyes!' Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, Morisot and others were often rejected by the official Salon. In 1874, they held their own exhibition.
Critics laughed that the paintings looked unfinished and mockingly called them 'Impressionists.' But they did not give up and held eight exhibitions in twelve years.
