On a hill in summer, a woman in a white dress holds a green parasol and looks down at us. A little behind her stands a boy in a hat. The models are Monet's wife, Camille, and their son Jean, who was about seven or eight. Monet painted it in 1875, when the family lived in Argenteuil near Paris. They seem to be on a family walk.
Monet chose a low viewpoint and placed the figures against the blue sky and white clouds. This makes the picture feel like a snapshot full of wind and light. The shadows on the dress contain blue, green and yellow, showing that even a white dress changes color in sunlight.
Camille died in 1879, at only 32. Seven years later, in 1886, Monet painted a woman with a parasol again, using another model. This 1875 painting later belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, who gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1983.
It is a windy summer day. A woman stands on a hill with a green parasol. She is Monet's wife, and the boy is their son. Look at her white dress. The shadows are blue and green, not black!
In 1886, Monet painted two more women with parasols, one facing left and one facing right, using Suzanne Hoschedé, who later became his stepdaughter, as the model. They are now in the Musée d'Orsay. In both, the face is almost blank. Monet seems to have cared more about light and wind than the person.
Look at the shadows on the skirt. You can see blue, purple, green and yellow. The green of the parasol and the blue of the sky are reflected on the dress. At a time when shadows were usually painted dark, the Impressionists showed that shadows have color too.
Camille was the model for many of Monet's paintings. In 1876, the next year, she posed for La Japonaise, a large painting of her in a bright red kimono with a fan. Try comparing her on the summer hill with her in the kimono.
The brushstrokes mix together quickly, as if each color was added before the last one dried. This is a typical Impressionist way to catch changing light and wind outdoors.
