Two women sit on beach chairs under sunshades. The woman in white on the left is Monet's wife, Camille. The woman in black on the right may be the wife of the painter Eugène Boudin, or someone from Monet's family. Monet painted it in summer 1870 in Trouville, a seaside town in northern France. It now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
In June that year, Monet married Camille. They spent the summer in Trouville with their three-year-old son, Jean. The older painter Boudin, famous for beach scenes, was there too. Monet took his canvas out onto the beach and painted fast, with big brushstrokes. Just a few thick strokes make the white dress and sunshades feel full of sun and wind.
But in July, war broke out between France and Prussia, part of today's Germany. At the end of the summer, Monet left for England to escape the fighting. The National Gallery in London bought this small painting in 1924. It is still loved as a clear example of the Impressionist way: painting fast, right on the spot.
Two women sit on a beach. One is Monet's wife, Camille. They hold sunshades. Monet painted this picture on the beach. Look closely! Real sand is in the paint.
On the surface, grains of sand blown by the sea breeze are stuck in the paint. They landed while the paint was wet. This proves that Monet painted at least part of it right there on the beach.
At the end of the summer, Monet left for England, but he was late leaving. According to the National Gallery, it was because he had not paid his hotel bill in Trouville. Life was hard for a young painter who did not sell much yet.
On the empty chair in the middle, a child's shoe seems to be hanging. The National Gallery says it may belong to Monet's three-year-old son, Jean. It is a moment from a family summer holiday.
At Monet and Camille's wedding in June 1870, the famous Realist painter Gustave Courbet was one of the witnesses. Young Monet was supported by older artists.
