Story

An orange sun rises over a misty harbor. In the foreground, there is a small boat with two figures. Behind it, cranes, chimneys and ship masts appear softly through the fog. Monet painted this morning in Le Havre, the port town in northern France where he grew up, with quick brushstrokes. It is a fairly small painting, about 63 cm wide.

In 1874, Monet and his friends held their own exhibition, separate from the official Salon. When asked for a title, Monet reportedly said, 'Put Impression.' The critic Louis Leroy made fun of the title in a newspaper and wrote about 'the Impressionists'. This insult became the name of a new art movement.

Later, the painting belonged to Monet's friend Dr. Georges de Bellio. In 1940, de Bellio's daughter, Victorine, and her husband, Eugène Donop de Monchy, gave it to the Musée Marmottan in Paris. In 1985, armed robbers stole it from the museum. Luckily, it was found in 1990 and returned. Today you can see it at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.

This is a harbor in the morning. The orange sun is rising. The misty harbor is soft blue and gray. Monet called this picture 'Impression'. That is how the name 'Impressionism' started!
