In a summer garden, women in white dresses pick flowers and sit under a parasol. The French painter Claude Monet began this picture in 1866, when he was 26. It is about 2.5 meters tall. Today it is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
To paint real sunlight, Monet worked on this huge canvas outdoors. To reach the top, he dug a trench in the garden and lowered the canvas into it. The model was Camille, who later became his wife. She posed for several of the women. For the fashionable dresses, he also looked at pictures in fashion magazines.
He sent it to the Salon of 1867, but it was rejected. To help Monet, who had no money, his friend the painter Frédéric Bazille bought it. Later the painting came back to Monet, and in 1921, the French state bought it from the old painter. His challenge of painting light and shadow outdoors led the way to Impressionism.

To paint a 2.5-meter canvas outdoors, Monet is said to have dug a trench in the garden and lowered the canvas into it. That way he could paint the top part without changing his point of view. It shows how serious Monet was about light.
After the Salon rejected it, Monet's friend Bazille bought the painting for 2,500 francs. He paid in monthly installments of 50 francs. Bazille came from a wealthy family, and he used his money to support his friend.
The model was Camille, Monet's girlfriend. It is thought that she posed for several of the women, with different clothes and hairstyles. Look closely, and you can see faces that look alike.
When it was rejected at the 1867 Salon, one judge reportedly said that too many young people were following this 'abominable direction.' But that direction later became Impressionism.
