On a snowy winter day, a black-and-white bird called a magpie sits on a wooden gate. Claude Monet painted this in the winter of 1868 to 1869, near Étretat in Normandy. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and is one of his most famous snow scenes.
Monet went outside in the cold to study the light on the snow. Instead of gray or black, he painted the shadows blue and pale purple. That was something new. The snow shines not only white, but also yellow and pink in the sunlight. These colored shadows later became a key feature of Impressionism.
Monet sent this painting to the 1869 Salon, the official art show in France, but it was rejected. The judges of the time could not accept a picture with brightly colored shadows. Today it is seen as one of the great masterpieces of Impressionism, and it has belonged to the Musée d'Orsay since 1984.

In the winter of 1868, a local journalist wrote about seeing Monet painting in the snow. He had a foot warmer, three coats and gloves, and his face was stiff with cold. It shows how serious Monet was about painting snow.
Magpies are very smart birds. A 2008 study reported that magpies might recognize themselves in a mirror. However, a later study did not get the same result, so the question is still debated.
In Europe, people have long said that magpies steal shiny things. There is even an opera by Rossini called 'The Thieving Magpie.' But in a British experiment in 2014, magpies actually tended to avoid shiny objects.
That winter, Monet lived in Étretat with his partner Camille and their one-year-old son, Jean. In a letter to his friend Bazille, he wrote that he painted outside in the day and came home to a warm fire and his little family at night. He was happy, though he had little money.
