Monet was born in Paris and grew up in the port town of Le Havre. The painter Eugène Boudin showed him the joy of painting outdoors. Monet learned to catch changing light and color with quick brushstrokes. His painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874, gave Impressionism its name. Later he made a water garden at his home in Giverny and painted water lilies for the rest of his life.
