Story夏の終わりの夕方近く、収穫のあとの畑に大小2つの積みわら（麦の束を積み上げた山）が立っています。低い日の光で、山の片側がオレンジ色にかがやき、影は紫や青にそまっています。モネの家があるジヴェルニーの、家のすぐそばの畑の景色です。画面の左下には、モネのサインと「91」の年号が見えます。
At the end of summer, two stacks of wheat, one large and one small, stand in a field after the harvest. Low sunlight makes one side of the stacks glow orange, while the shadows turn purple and blue. This field was right next to Monet's house in Giverny. Monet's signature and '91' appear at the lower left.
1890年の夏から翌年の冬まで、モネは同じ積みわらを、時間や季節、天気を変えて約25枚描きました。光はすぐに変わるので、何枚ものキャンバスを畑に持ち出し、光にあわせて次々とかけかえて描いたと伝えられます。「描きたいのは物ではなく、物を包む光と空気」という考えが、ここではっきり形になりました。
From summer 1890 to the next winter, Monet painted the same stacks about 25 times in different light, seasons and weather. The light changed quickly, so he is said to have taken many canvases to the field and switched between them as the light changed. His idea was clear: he wanted to paint not the objects, but the light and air around them.

In 1891, fifteen of these paintings were shown at a gallery in Paris, and they sold very quickly. The exhibition was a success and made Monet's reputation even stronger. Collectors in Chicago were eager to buy the series, and today the Art Institute of Chicago owns several of them. This one came to the museum in 1985.

Secrets1896年、モスクワの展覧会で積みわらの絵を見た若きカンディンスキーは、カタログを見るまで何が描いてあるかわかりませんでした。それでも色の力に心をゆさぶられ、のちに形のない「抽象画」を生み出すきっかけになったと書いています。
In 1896, the young Wassily Kandinsky saw a Haystacks painting at an exhibition in Moscow. He could not tell what it showed until he read the catalogue. But the colors moved him deeply. He later wrote that this experience helped lead him to abstract art.
2019年、ニューヨークのオークションで、連作の一枚『積みわら』が約1億1070万ドル（当時のレートで約120億円）で落札され、モネ作品の最高記録になりました。ただの麦の山の絵が、印象派の絵の中でも指折りの高値になったのです。
In 2019, one painting from this series sold at auction in New York for about 110.7 million dollars. It became the highest price ever paid for a Monet. A painting of simple wheat stacks became one of the most expensive Impressionist works.
英語では Haystacks（干し草の山）とよく呼ばれますが、フランス語の原題は「meules」で、この連作では、脱穀まで畑に置かれた麦などの穀物の束の山を指します。シカゴ美術館では Stacks of Wheat（麦の山）と呼んでいます。
In English, these paintings are often called Haystacks. But the French title is 'meules'. In this series, the word means stacks of harvested grain kept in the field until threshing. The Art Institute of Chicago calls them Stacks of Wheat.
光は数分で変わってしまいます。モネは畑に何枚ものキャンバスを並べ、光が変わるたびに次の絵にとりかかったといいます。ある日の光の状態が戻ってくると、また同じ絵の続きを描いたのです。
The light changes in minutes. Monet is said to have set up many canvases in the field and moved to the next one whenever the light changed. When the same light came back on another day, he continued that painting.
