She wears a silk dress with green and black stripes and a black jacket trimmed with fur. She has her back to us, turns only her face to the side, and touches the ribbon under her chin. The model is Camille Doncieux, who later became Monet's wife. Monet painted this life-size portrait, more than two meters tall, in 1866 at the age of 25. It is now in the Kunsthalle Bremen in Germany.
Monet planned to send his huge painting "Luncheon on the Grass" to that year's Salon, the official national exhibition, but he could not finish it in time. Instead, he painted this picture quickly. Some say he finished it in only four days. The large figure standing out against a dark background shows the influence of older painters such as Manet and Courbet. It is very different from Monet's later, brighter Impressionist works.
It was accepted at the 1866 Salon and praised by critics. The writer Émile Zola praised it warmly too. With this success, the young Monet's name became much better known. It is said that Arsène Houssaye, editor of the art magazine L'Artiste, bought it for 800 francs. Later it came to the Kunsthalle Bremen.

Later, when Monet could not pay his rent, he left the unfinished "Luncheon on the Grass" with his landlord as security. When he got it back years later, it was damaged by damp, so Monet cut it up. Two surviving pieces are now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
At the 1865 Salon, Monet's sea paintings got good reviews. It is said that people then congratulated Manet, a painter with a very similar name, on the seascapes. Manet was reportedly quite annoyed to be praised for someone else's work. The two men with almost the same name later became close friends.
Camille was in her late teens at the time. This is one of the first large paintings Monet made of her. They married in 1870, and Camille appeared in many more of his masterpieces, including a woman with a parasol and a woman in a kimono. This green dress painting marks the beginning of their story.
She stands with her back to us, as if she is walking away. Thanks to this pose, the long train of the dress and its flowing stripes fill the picture. Zola especially praised how softly the dress was painted. The star of the picture is not only the woman, but the dress itself.
