この作品のお話
Story木かげのテラスで、紺色の服の男性と、花がらのドレスに赤い帽子の女性が、体をよせ合って踊っています。女性は手に扇を持ち、うれしそうに笑いながらこちらを見ています。足もとには麦わら帽子が落ちたまま。ルノワールが1883年に描いた、高さ約1.8メートルの作品で、パリのオルセー美術館の所蔵です。
On a shady terrace, a man in a dark blue suit and a woman in a flowered dress and red hat dance close together. The woman holds a fan and smiles happily at us. A straw hat lies forgotten on the ground. Renoir painted this in 1883. It is about 1.8 meters tall and is in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
ルノワールは同じ年に、ほぼ同じ大きさの『都会のダンス』も描き、2枚を対にしました。都会の絵では、白い絹のドレスの女性がすました顔で踊りますが、こちらの女性は木綿の花がらのドレスで、こぼれるような笑顔。テーブルの上の飲みかけのグラスも、気取らない田舎の楽しさを伝えています。
In the same year, Renoir also painted "Dance in the City" in almost the same size, as a pair to this one. In the city picture, a woman in a white silk gown dances with a cool face. Here, the woman wears a cotton dress with little flowers and has a big, bright smile. The half-finished drink on the table also shows the relaxed fun of the countryside.
女性のモデルは、のちにルノワールの妻となるアリーヌ・シャリゴ、男性は友人のポール・ロートです。2人のあいだにはのちに3人の息子が生まれ、家族はルノワールの絵にたびたび登場します。『都会のダンス』とこの絵は、今ではオルセー美術館の人気作として、多くの人に親しまれています。
The woman was modeled by Aline Charigot, who later became Renoir's wife. The man was his friend Paul Lhote. Renoir and Aline later had three sons, and the family often appears in Renoir's paintings. Today, "Dance in the City" and this painting are popular works at the Musée d'Orsay, loved by many visitors.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsアリーヌとルノワールの次男ジャン・ルノワールは、『大いなる幻影』などで知られる、フランスを代表する映画監督になりました。ジャンは父の思い出を『わが父ルノワール』という本にまとめています。絵の中で笑う女性は、映画の巨匠のお母さんなのです。
Jean Renoir, the second son of Aline and Renoir, became one of France's greatest film directors, known for films such as "La Grande Illusion". He wrote a book of memories, "Renoir, My Father". The woman laughing in this picture was the mother of a great filmmaker.
このころのルノワールは、自分は印象派の行き着くところまで行ってしまい、絵の描き方も素描のしかたもわからなくなった、という意味のことを、のちに画商ヴォラールに語ったと伝えられます。そこで輪郭をはっきり描く方向へ進みました。この絵の人物のくっきりした形にも、その変化が見られます。
Renoir later told the art dealer Vollard that around this time he felt he had gone as far as Impressionism could go, and that he no longer knew how to paint or draw. So he moved toward clearer outlines. You can see this change in the sharp shapes of the figures here.
右下の床には、男性のものらしい麦わら帽子が落ちています。それでも2人は踊りをやめません。女性の手には赤い模様の扇。踊りに夢中で帽子が落ちたことにも気づかない、楽しいひとときの音楽まで聞こえてきそうです。
At the bottom right, a straw hat, probably the man's, lies on the ground. But the two keep dancing. The woman holds a fan with a red pattern. They are too busy dancing to notice the hat, and we can almost hear the music.
アリーヌは、フランス・シャンパーニュ地方の村エソワの出身です。ルノワール一家はのちにエソワに家を持ち、夏をすごしました。ルノワールとアリーヌは、今もエソワの墓地にならんでねむっています。
Aline came from Essoyes, a village in the Champagne region of France. The Renoir family later had a house there and spent summers in the village. Renoir and Aline now rest side by side in the cemetery of Essoyes.
