雨のパリの街かど。人々がいっせいに灰色がかった青い傘を広げています。左には帽子の箱をかかえた若い女性、右には輪回しの輪を持った女の子と、その母親らしい女性がいます。描いたのはルノワールで、1881年ごろから1886年ごろにかけて完成させた大作です。今はロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーにあります。

It is a rainy street in Paris. People open their grey-blue umbrellas all at once. On the left is a young woman carrying a hatbox. On the right are a little girl with a hoop and a woman who seems to be her mother. Renoir worked on this large picture from about 1881 to about 1886. It is now in the National Gallery in London.

ルノワールはこの絵を2回に分けて描きました。まず右側の人々を、ふわふわとした印象派らしい筆づかいで描きます。その後イタリアを旅して古典の名画に感動し、「印象派では行きづまった」と感じるようになりました。数年後、左側を、はっきりした輪郭のかたい描き方で描き直したのです。

Renoir painted this picture in two stages. First, he painted the people on the right in a soft, feathery Impressionist style. Then he traveled to Italy and was deeply moved by the old masters. He began to feel he had reached a dead end with Impressionism. A few years later, he repainted the left side with clear outlines and a firmer style.

ルノワールがこの絵を仕上げたのは、1886年にニューヨークで開かれる大きな印象派展に出すためでした。その後、画商デュラン＝リュエルに大きさのわりに安い値段で売られ、1907年にアイルランドの収集家ヒュー・レインが買いました。今はロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーとダブリンのヒュー・レイン美術館が分け合い、ダブリンでも長く展示されています。

Renoir finished the painting so it could be shown at a big Impressionist exhibition in New York in 1886. Later he sold it to the dealer Durand-Ruel for a low price for such a large work. In 1907, the Irish collector Hugh Lane bought it. Today the National Gallery in London and the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin share it, and it has also been shown in Dublin for long periods.
