Storyセーヌ川の中州の町シャトゥーにあるレストラン「メゾン・フルネーズ」のバルコニー。舟遊びのあとの若者たちが、ワインや果物を囲んでランチを楽しんでいます。しま模様の日よけ、白いテーブルクロス、麦わら帽子。夏の午後の光とおしゃべりがあふれる、ルノワールの代表作です。
This is the balcony of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on an island in the Seine at Chatou. After boating, young people enjoy lunch with wine and fruit. Striped awning, white tablecloth, straw hats. This famous painting by Renoir is full of summer light and conversation.
描かれているのは、ルノワールの友人や知人、店の関係者など、実在のモデルたちです。右下でいすに逆向きにまたがるのは画家カイユボット、中央でグラスを口にするのは女優エレン・アンドレ、奥のシルクハットの紳士は美術評論家エフリュシ。そして左で小さな犬をあやす女性は、お針子のアリーヌ・シャリゴ。のちにルノワールの妻になる人です。
The figures are real people who knew Renoir or were connected with the restaurant. At the lower right, the painter Gustave Caillebotte sits backwards on a chair. In the center, the actress Ellen Andrée drinks from a glass. In the back, the art critic Charles Ephrussi wears a top hat. On the left, the seamstress Aline Charigot plays with a little dog. She later became Renoir's wife.
絵は1882年の第7回印象派展に出品され、高い評価を受けました。画商デュラン＝リュエルが買い、1923年にアメリカの収集家ダンカン・フィリップスが12万5000ドルで手に入れました。今もフィリップスが自宅を美術館にした「フィリップス・コレクション」でもっとも人気のある作品の一つです。
It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 and was highly praised. The dealer Paul Durand-Ruel bought it, and in 1923 the American collector Duncan Phillips bought it for 125,000 dollars. It is still one of the most popular works at the Phillips Collection, the museum Phillips created in his own home.

Secrets左手前で小さな犬に顔を寄せているのが、アリーヌ・シャリゴ。当時20歳ほどのお針子で、ルノワールの恋人でした。二人はのちに結婚し、3人の息子が生まれます。次男ジャン・ルノワールは有名な映画監督になりました。
The woman holding the little dog at the front left is Aline Charigot. She was a young seamstress and Renoir's girlfriend. They later married and had three sons. Their second son, Jean Renoir, became a famous film director.
2001年のフランス映画『アメリ』には、この絵を毎年1枚、20年間模写し続けている老画家が登場します。彼はどうしても、グラスで水を飲む女性の表情だけがうまく描けないのです。映画を見た人がこの絵を見に行くきっかけにもなりました。
In the 2001 French film Amélie, an old painter has copied this painting once a year for 20 years. He can never get the expression of the girl drinking from a glass right. The film made many people want to see the real painting.
中央でグラスを口にする女優エレン・アンドレは、ドガの『アブサン』（オルセー美術館）でカフェにぼんやり座る女性のモデルでもあります。同じ人が、ルノワールでは明るく、ドガではさびしげに描かれているのです。
Ellen Andrée, the actress drinking in the center, also posed for Degas's painting L'Absinthe in the Musée d'Orsay. There, she sits in a café looking empty and lonely. The same woman looks cheerful in Renoir's painting and sad in Degas's.
アメリカの映画俳優エドワード・G・ロビンソンは、何年もこの絵を見に通い、どうやって盗むかを考えていたと冗談まじりに語っています。それほど人をひきつける絵なのです。
The American film star Edward G. Robinson said, as a joke, that he visited this painting for years and planned how to steal it. That is how much people love it.
