Story

A girl with long reddish-brown hair and a blue ribbon sits quietly, facing to the side. She is Irène, the eight-year-old eldest daughter of the wealthy Paris banker Louis Cahen d'Anvers. In 1880, her family asked Renoir to paint her. The green background and the blue shadows on her white dress make her skin and hair shine.

Around this time, Renoir began to get portrait orders from rich families. The art critic Charles Ephrussi, who appears in Luncheon of the Boating Party, is said to have introduced him to this family. But the family did not like the painting much, and Renoir's fee of 1,500 francs is said to have been paid late.

Irène later married into the Camondo banking family. Her Jewish family suffered terribly in the Second World War, and the Nazis took this painting. It was found after the war, in 1946, and returned to Irène. Later, the Swiss collector Emil Bührle bought it. Today you can see it at the Kunsthaus Zürich.
