Two fashionable women sit in a rowing boat on a park lake. Ducks swim on the water to the right. The French painter Berthe Morisot painted this scene in the Bois de Boulogne, a large park in Paris, in about 1879. The National Gallery in London holds it in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery, and from 2026 to 2031 it is on long-term loan in Dublin, Ireland.
Morisot's daughter Julie had been born the winter before. Morisot lived nearby and often visited the Bois de Boulogne. A watercolor study was probably made beside the lake, but the oil painting was likely finished at least partly in the studio, perhaps with models posing in her garden. Quick zigzag strokes bring both the sparkling water and the light on the dresses to life.
The painting was shown at the fifth Impressionist exhibition in 1880, and critics praised her delicate use of color. Later it belonged to the Irish collector Hugh Lane, and it was caught up in a long fight between London and Dublin over his will. In 1956, that fight even led to the painting being taken from a museum!

In April 1956, two Irish students took this painting from the Tate Gallery in London in broad daylight. They did not want money. They wanted to show that Lane's paintings should go to Ireland.
A few days later, the painting was left at the Irish Embassy without a name, and it came back safely. The students were not charged. Some say the police worried they would become Irish heroes.
The two women may have been professional models. They appear in identical clothes in another Morisot painting, 'In the Bois de Boulogne.' The two pictures were shown together at the 1880 Impressionist exhibition.
The dark blue jacket of the woman on the left is painted with cerulean blue, an expensive pigment. The green trees include cadmium yellow, a new paint that was not yet widely used at the time.
