A girl slumped in a chair. And Degas himself helped paint the background!
A little girl leans back lazily in a blue armchair. On the chair to the left, a small dog is curled up asleep. The American-born painter Mary Cassatt made this picture in 1878. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The girl was the daughter of friends of Degas.
At that time, portraits of children usually showed them sitting nicely and politely. Cassatt painted a bored, tired child just as she was. The blue chairs fill the picture, and the gray floor spreads out at an angle, making a bold design. Degas gave advice on the background and even painted part of it himself.
Cassatt sent this painting to the American section of the 1878 World's Fair in Paris, but it was rejected. Later, the dealer Ambroise Vollard bought it. In 1963, it went to the American collectors Paul and Bunny Mellon, who gave it to the National Gallery of Art in 1983. Today it is one of Cassatt's best-known works.
A little girl sits in a big blue chair. She looks tired and bored. A small dog is sleeping on another chair. Mary Cassatt painted this. Her friend Degas helped her with the background!
Later, Cassatt wrote angrily to an art dealer about the rejection. The jury had only three people, she said, and one of them was a pharmacist! Degas had praised the painting and even helped with it, so she was especially upset.
In her letter, Cassatt wrote that Degas had worked on the background. In recent years, the National Gallery of Art cleaned the painting and studied it with infrared photography. They confirmed that Degas had indeed painted parts of the background.
The sleeping dog is a Brussels griffon. Degas gave Cassatt a puppy from his friend Viscount Lepic, who also bred dogs. Cassatt is said to have loved this breed for the rest of her life.
Degas is said to have looked at Cassatt's work and remarked that he would not admit a woman could draw so well. They were friends for many years, but Cassatt is said to have destroyed his letters late in life. Their friendship still holds some mysteries.
