A little girl leans back lazily in a blue armchair. On the chair to the left, a small dog is curled up asleep. The American-born painter Mary Cassatt made this picture in 1878. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The girl was the daughter of friends of Degas.

🦉 Fun Fact! Later, Cassatt wrote angrily to an art dealer about the rejection. The jury had only three people, she said, and one of them was a pharmacist! Degas had praised the painting and even helped with it, so she was especially upset.
