Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania, USA, and moved to Paris to study art. Degas invited her to show with the Impressionists, and she became the only American member. She painted many gentle scenes of mothers and children. Inspired by Japanese prints, she also made colorful prints of her own. She encouraged American collectors to buy Impressionist art, which helped bring many works to the United States.
