Story

A woman holding a baby sits in a bright yellow-green boat. In front, a man in dark blue is rowing. The painter was Mary Cassatt, an American artist who worked in Paris. She painted it in the winter of 1893–1894 in Antibes, in the south of France. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

In 1890, Cassatt was amazed by a large exhibition of Japanese prints in Paris, and she owned prints by Kitagawa Utamaro. The high viewpoint and the boldly cut-off boat show the influence of ukiyo-e. The strong contrast between the dark rower and the bright yellow boat also catches the eye.

Cassatt kept this painting for a long time. In a letter, she wrote that she had promised it to her family. But later she let it go, and in 1929 the American collector Chester Dale bought it. It entered the museum in 1963. In 1966, it appeared on an American postage stamp, and today it is one of her best-known works.
