No moon, no stars, only city lights. The one night scene Pissarro ever painted.
It is a Paris night after the rain. Shop lights line both sides of a wide boulevard, and the small lamps of carriages shine like dots. Camille Pissarro painted this in 1897, looking down at the Boulevard Montmartre from his hotel window. It is now in the National Gallery in London.
In February that year, Pissarro rented a hotel room in Paris. From the window, he painted the boulevard 14 times, in the morning and evening, in sun, rain and snow. Eye problems made painting outdoors hard for him, which may be why he chose a window view. He repainted parts of this night scene before he was happy with it.
For many years, the painting belonged to his son Lucien. In 1925, it was bought from a London gallery with the Courtauld Fund and given to the British nation. It later became part of the National Gallery. It remains popular as a record of a modern city night, where white electric light mixes with the warm glow of gas lamps and oil lamps. It is sometimes not on display, which makes it a bit of a rare treat.
This is a street in Paris at night. It rained, so the road is shining. Pissarro painted it from a hotel window. He painted this street fourteen times. But this is his only night painting.
Pissarro painted many country views and working people. According to the National Gallery, this is the only night painting he ever made. There is no moon and no stars, only city lights, which makes it a very bold night scene.
The round white streetlight in the front is an electric arc lamp. It had only just appeared on the boulevards of Paris. Gas-lit shop windows glow yellow and orange, and the oil lamps of cabs are dots of red and white. You can even tell the kinds of light apart.
Pissarro painted Paris, but he was born on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean. It was Danish then and is now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. A boy from a tropical island grew up to become a leader of Impressionism.
There were eight Impressionist exhibitions from 1874 to 1886. Pissarro was the only artist who showed work at all of them. Older and kind, he gave advice to younger painters like Cézanne and Gauguin. He was like a father to the group.
