Pissarro was born on the Caribbean island of St Thomas, now part of the US Virgin Islands. At about 25, he moved to Paris to become a painter. He painted country landscapes and working people. In his later years, he painted the busy boulevards of Paris from hotel windows. He was kind and caring. He taught Cézanne and Gauguin and was like a father to the Impressionist group.
