This is the Saint-Lazare station in Paris. A locomotive comes in under a huge roof of iron and glass, and white and blue steam fills the station. Claude Monet painted it in 1877. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Beyond the roof, you can see city buildings in bright sunshine.
In 1877, Monet rented a studio near the station and painted about twelve views of the station and its tracks. A station of iron and steam was a symbol of modern Paris. Monet tried to paint the shapeless steam and smoke as changes in light and air. That same year, he showed several station paintings at the third Impressionist exhibition.
This painting belonged to Monet's friend Gustave Caillebotte, a painter and collector, and it went to the French state through his will. Caillebotte's collection was a big step in bringing Impressionist art into national museums. Monet's station series is now spread across museums in Paris, London, Chicago and other cities.
This is a train station in Paris. A black train is coming in. White and blue steam fills the station. Monet loved this smoky place. He painted it about twelve times!
According to a story said to come from Renoir, Monet put on his best clothes and visited the stationmaster. The man thought Monet was a famous artist, so he stopped trains and made them puff out extra smoke. No one knows if it is true, but it is a famous tale.
The painter Caillebotte owned this work. He was rich, and he supported his struggling friends by buying their paintings. He is even said to have paid the rent on Monet's studio. This painting became state property as part of the Impressionist collection he left behind.
A large iron bridge, the Pont de l'Europe, crossed the tracks outside the station. Caillebotte painted it in 'The Pont de l'Europe' in 1876, and Monet also painted the bridge and tracks around the same time. The friends painted the same place in their own ways.
In 1837, the first passenger railway in Paris started near this station, running out to the suburbs toward Saint-Germain. Trains to Argenteuil, where Monet lived, also left from here. Saint-Lazare is still one of the busiest stations in France.
