Umbrellas on wet cobblestones. Like a photo, but even stranger than a photo.
A wet street corner in Paris on a rainy day. In the front, a well-dressed couple walks toward us under an umbrella. Behind them, there is a large building with a sharp corner, a cobblestone square and people with umbrellas. The painter, Gustave Caillebotte, came from a wealthy family. He exhibited it in 1877, when he was 28. It is more than 2 meters tall and 2.7 meters wide.
The place is near the Saint-Lazare train station, in today's Place de Dublin, close to Caillebotte's home. This area was part of the new Paris, just rebuilt in a huge city project. It had wide streets, stone buildings of the same height and gas lamps. Caillebotte made more than 20 studies and carefully planned the perspective to build this neat city view.
It was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. Caillebotte organized that exhibition and helped pay for it. After his death, his paintings were overlooked for a long time. But in 1964 the Art Institute of Chicago bought this work, and today it is one of the museum's most popular paintings. His signature and the date 1877 are at the lower left.

Caillebotte inherited a fortune from his father. He bought paintings by Monet, Renoir and others, paid for exhibitions and even paid the rent for Monet's studio. He was not only a painter but also an important supporter of the Impressionists.
In the 1880s, Caillebotte stepped back from exhibitions. He loved designing and racing yachts, gardening and collecting stamps. The stamp collection he made with his brother became famous among collectors.
Because the picture is so precise, some people thought Caillebotte traced photos. A 2015 Art Institute experiment found strong evidence that he may have used a camera lucida, a drawing tool with a prism, for the first study. However, no document confirming this has been found.
The green lamppost in the middle divides the picture into two halves. On the left is the wide square, and on the right is the large couple. The man at the right edge is cut in half, like a moment caught by a camera.
