Caillebotte was born into a wealthy family in Paris. He studied law before becoming a painter. He painted modern Paris with strong, dramatic perspective, like a rainy street corner or workers scraping a floor. He bought paintings from struggling friends such as Monet and Renoir. He also paid for exhibitions to support the Impressionists. He died at 45 and left his collection to the French state.
