Rejected by the 1875 Salon! Workers scraping a floor became a modern masterpiece.
In a room of a Paris apartment, three workers without shirts kneel and scrape a wooden floor. Light from the window shines on the stripes of the scraped floor and the curly wood shavings. On the right, there is a bottle of wine and a glass, perhaps for a break. Caillebotte painted it in 1875, when he was about 27.
The room was in the Caillebotte family home in Paris and was probably being prepared as his studio. He sent this painting to the official Salon of 1875, but it was rejected. The exact reason was not recorded, but its stark realism may have shocked the jury. Some critics called the subject 'vulgar'.
So in 1876, Caillebotte showed it at the second Impressionist exhibition and joined the group. The writer Émile Zola praised his skill but called the work 'anti-artistic' because it was too exact. In 1894, his family gave it to the French state. Today it is in the Musée d'Orsay. A large signature and the date are at the lower right.
Three men work in an empty room. They scrape the wooden floor. Light comes in from the window. In 1875, the Salon jury rejected the painting. But now it is a famous painting.

There were paintings of farmers, but a large oil painting of city workers without shirts was very unusual. The Salon jury rejected it. This led Caillebotte to join the Impressionists.
The wood shavings on the floor are curly. The iron railing at the window has curly shapes too. Experts point out that these repeated curls give the picture a rhythm.
Even Émile Zola, who supported the Impressionists, was harsh about this painting. He called it 'anti-artistic' because it was too exact. Its photo-like precision was perhaps too new at the time. Today, this precise style is seen as one of the painting's special features.
In 1988, the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj created a dance called Les Raboteurs, based on this painting. The strong movements of the floor scrapers became a stage dance.
