A young man stands at a window with his hands in his pockets and looks down at the street. Gustave Caillebotte painted this in 1876 at his family's home on the Rue de Miromesnil in Paris. The model was his younger brother, René. It is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Outside the window are a wide new boulevard and new apartment buildings, built during the great rebuilding of Paris. Caillebotte showed the modern city from bold viewpoints, looking down from high windows and balconies. This painting was shown at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, together with 'The Floor Scrapers.'
For many years, this painting was in private collections. In 2021, it sold at Christie's in New York for about 53 million dollars, the highest price ever for a work by Caillebotte. The buyer was the Getty Museum, and it became the museum's first painting by him.

At an auction in 2021, this painting sold for about 53 million dollars, a record for Caillebotte. That is about 6 billion yen. A picture of a man whose face we cannot even see sold for that much!
René, the model, died suddenly in 1876, the same year this was painted. He was still in his twenties. Shocked, his brother Gustave wrote a will at just 28. In it, he decided to give his collection of Impressionist paintings to the French state.
The writer Zola criticized Caillebotte's work as 'anti-artistic' because it copied things too exactly. His careful, photo-like style was unusual among the Impressionists. Today, that exactness is seen as his special charm.
Caillebotte came from a wealthy family. Besides painting, he loved designing and racing yachts, collecting stamps and growing orchids. He even won races in boats he designed himself.
