The street became a river!? Sisley paints the sky and water on a flood day.
The River Seine has overflowed, and the town's street is under water. On the right is a double row of trees, with the real river behind them, and big clouds drift across the sky. Alfred Sisley painted this flood at Port-Marly, west of Paris, in March 1876. You can see it at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain.
Sisley lived in nearby Marly-le-Roi from 1874. He painted the 1876 flood seven times, from the first rise of the water until it went down. In this picture, the sun has come out and the water is going down. The horizon is low, and most of the canvas is sky, so the moving clouds seem to be the real subject.
Sisley had also painted four pictures of a flood in the same town in December 1872. His 1876 flood pictures are now spread across museums such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the museum in Rouen. This one belongs to the collection of Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza and is shown at the museum in Madrid.
The river came into the town. Now the street is under water. People use a boat in the street! But the sun is out, and the water is going down. Sisley made seven paintings of this flood.

Sisley was born in Paris and spent almost his whole life in France. But his parents were English, and he stayed a British citizen. Late in life he applied to become French, but he died before it was completed.
Sisley's family grew rich from the silk trade. But after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, his father's business failed and the family lost its money. From then on, Sisley had to support his family by selling paintings, and he struggled for the rest of his life.
In September 1876, the poet Stéphane Mallarmé wrote about Sisley in a British art magazine. He described him as a painter who captures the fleeting effects of light. The museum in Madrid says those words fit this painting well.
During his life, Sisley's paintings rarely sold for much. But after he died in 1899, his fame grew quickly. At an auction the next year, his flood painting now in the Musée d'Orsay is said to have sold for more than 40,000 francs.
