Sunlight in spots through the leaves! A picture of light once mocked as "grease stains".
In the shade of the trees, a young woman in a white dress with blue bows stands on a swing. A man with his back to us is talking to her. A bearded man stands by the tree, and a little girl is at the far left. On their clothes and on the ground, sunlight through the leaves falls in white and pale yellow spots. Renoir painted this in 1876. It is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
In the summer of 1876, Renoir rented an old house with a garden in Montmartre, Paris. He painted this picture in that garden around the same time as his big work "Dance at the Moulin de la Galette". The models are said to include a young woman from the neighborhood and his painter friend Norbert Goeneutte. The real subject is not the faces but the summer air made by light and shadow.
It was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877, and the painter Caillebotte soon bought it. Later it went to the French state through his will. At the time, many critics did not understand this way of painting sunlight in spots of color. Today it is seen as one of the best examples of how the Impressionists painted light.
A young woman stands on a swing. A man talks to her. A little girl watches them. Look at the white spots! They are sunlight through the leaves.
A critic of the time mocked the spots of light on the clothes and ground, saying they looked like grease stains. Another complained that Renoir's blue was too harsh. But today these spots are seen as a clever Impressionist way of catching flickering sunlight through leaves.
During the 1877 Impressionist exhibition, Renoir's friend Georges Rivière published a small magazine called "The Impressionist" to support his friends' work. In it, he praised the quiet charm of this painting. Not everyone was unkind.
The house Renoir rented was on Rue Cortot in Montmartre. The building is now the Montmartre Museum, and it has a garden named after Renoir. You can walk there and imagine the sunny garden in the painting.
Fragonard's "The Swing", painted about 110 years earlier, is a showy picture of a woman flying high, with her shoe flying off. Renoir's swing hardly moves, and the people are just chatting. Even swing paintings had changed into quiet moments of everyday life.
