Story花の咲く庭の小道に、紺色のワンピースを着た小さな女の子が立っています。金色の髪に赤いリボン、手には緑のじょうろと白い花。ほおはばら色で、少し照れたように横を見ています。ルノワールが1876年に描いた作品で、今はアメリカのワシントン・ナショナル・ギャラリーにあります。
A little girl in a dark blue dress stands on a path in a flower garden. She has golden hair with a red bow, and she holds a green watering can and some white flowers. Her cheeks are rosy, and she looks to the side a little shyly. Renoir painted this in 1876. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
背景の庭は、パリ郊外アルジャントゥイユにあった友人モネの家の庭ではないかと考えられています。少女の顔はなめらかにていねいに描かれているのに、まわりの花や草は、短い筆あとをふわふわと重ねて描かれています。この描き分けのおかげで、少女が庭の中からふんわりと浮かび上がって見えるのです。
The garden may be the garden of Renoir's friend Monet in Argenteuil, near Paris. The girl's face is painted smoothly and carefully, but the flowers and grass around her are made of soft, short brushstrokes. Because of this difference, the girl seems to float gently out of the garden.
女の子がだれなのかは、わかっていません。近所の子どもの一人だったとも考えられています。絵はパリのコレクターたちの手をへて、のちにアメリカの収集家チェスター・デールのものとなり、彼の遺贈によってナショナル・ギャラリーに入りました。今では館を代表する人気作の一つです。
Nobody knows who the girl was. She may have been one of the children in the neighborhood. The painting passed through the hands of collectors in Paris and later belonged to the American collector Chester Dale. It came to the National Gallery of Art through his bequest. Today it is one of the museum's most popular paintings.

Secretsこの絵が描かれた1876年は、ルノワールが『ぶらんこ』や『ムーラン・ド・ラ・ギャレットの舞踏会』を描いた年でもあります。木もれ日やにぎやかな人々を描いた大作の一方で、こうした子どもの肖像も手がけていました。ルノワールにとって、とても実りの多い1年だったのです。
In 1876, the year of this painting, Renoir also painted "The Swing" and "Dance at the Moulin de la Galette". Besides these big works full of sunlight and crowds, he also painted portraits of children like this one. It was a very rich year for Renoir.
ルノワールは1873年ごろから、アルジャントゥイユのモネの家をよく訪れました。1873年には、庭でイーゼルに向かうモネの姿を描いた『アルジャントゥイユの庭で絵を描くモネ』（アメリカ、ワズワース・アセニアム美術館）も残しています。この少女の庭も、そのモネの庭だと考えられています。
From around 1873, Renoir often visited Monet's house in Argenteuil. In 1873, he painted "Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil" (Wadsworth Atheneum, USA), showing Monet at his easel. The garden in this picture is also thought to be Monet's.
この絵の大きさは100×73センチ。フランスで使われていた風景用カンヴァスの規格サイズで、日本の画材店でいう「40号（P）」とほぼ同じです。日本の絵のサイズ「号」は、フランスの規格をもとにしたもの。名画と同じ大きさのカンヴァスは、今でも買えるのです。
This painting is 100 by 73 cm. That is a standard French canvas size for landscapes, and it is almost the same as a "No. 40 P" canvas in Japanese art shops. Japanese canvas sizes are based on the French system. You can still buy a canvas the same size as this masterpiece.
画面のほとんどは緑と青。その中で、頭の赤いリボンと小さな赤い花だけがぱっと目をひきます。赤と緑は「補色」と呼ばれる、おたがいを引き立て合う色の組み合わせ。小さな赤が、見る人の目を少女の顔へと導いているのです。
Most of the picture is green and blue. Only the red bow in her hair and a few small red flowers catch the eye. Red and green are complementary colors, which make each other stand out. The small touches of red lead our eyes to the girl's face.
