This is a Sunday afternoon at the Moulin de la Galette, an open-air dance hall on the hill of Montmartre in Paris. People chat at tables in the shade, and couples dance hand in hand. Sunlight comes through the leaves and falls in white spots on clothes and faces. Renoir painted this masterpiece when he was 35.
'Moulin' means windmill. The place stood by a windmill on the hill and was famous for a flat cake called a galette, so it got this name. Renoir rented a studio nearby and asked his friends, painters and writers, to pose. Together they recreated the lively Sunday mood.
It was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. Later, Renoir's fellow painter Gustave Caillebotte bought it. After Caillebotte died, it went to the French state according to his will. Today it is one of the stars of the Musée d'Orsay. A smaller version of the same scene belongs to a private collector.
It is Sunday in Paris. Many people dance and talk under the trees. Look at the white spots on their clothes. That is sunlight through the leaves! A smaller copy of this painting sold for 78 million dollars.

In 1990, the smaller version was sold at auction in New York. The Japanese paper company owner Ryoei Saito bought it for 78.1 million dollars. In the same week, he also bought Van Gogh's Portrait of Dr. Gachet, and the news went around the world.
Saito was reported to have said he wanted the paintings burned with him when he died. Art lovers around the world were shocked. He later explained it was a joke. Both paintings were later sold to new owners, according to reports.
'Moulin' means windmill, and 'galette' is a flat, round cake. Montmartre once had many windmills for grinding wheat. The dance hall by one of them served galettes, and that gave it its name.
Caillebotte, who bought this painting, was a wealthy painter. He bought many works by his friends and helped them live. In his will, he left his collection to France. Thanks to him, this painting and works by Monet and Degas are now in the Musée d'Orsay.
