Story

At an outdoor dance under the trees, a man and a woman dance close together. The woman's pink dress swings out, and you can almost hear the happy music. Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted this in 1883. It is a big picture, about 1.8 meters tall. It is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Bougival is a town on the Seine, west of Paris. On holidays, people came from Paris to go boating and dancing there. Around the same time, Renoir also painted 'Dance in the City' and 'Dance in the Country,' both about the same size. Together with this one, they make three dance paintings.

The dancers have traditionally been identified as Suzanne Valadon, who later became a painter, and Renoir's friend Paul Lhote. However, X-rays and other studies suggest that the woman may combine features of more than one model. The painting passed through art dealers to America, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, bought it in 1937. Today it is one of the museum's most popular works.
