On a terrace full of flowers, a young woman in a red hat sits with a little girl in a hat covered with flowers. Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted this in 1881. It is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Behind them, you can see the River Seine and boats between the trees.
The scene is the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on an island in the Seine at Chatou, west of Paris. Shortly before, Renoir had painted his famous 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' at the same place. He painted the people smoothly and the trees and river with quick strokes, so the two figures stand out.
When the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting in 1881, his stock book called it 'Woman on a Terrace by the Seine.' The next year, he showed it as 'Two Sisters' at the seventh Impressionist exhibition. It was later also called 'On the Terrace,' and its title today combines the two names. It has been in the Art Institute of Chicago since 1933.
Two people sit on a terrace. One wears a red hat. One is a little girl with flowers on her hat. The title is 'Two Sisters.' But they are not really sisters!
The title says 'Two Sisters,' but the two models were not sisters. The older one was Jeanne Darlot, an 18-year-old who later became an actress. No one knows who the little girl was.
In 1881, the dealer Durand-Ruel bought this painting for 1,500 francs. More than 40 years later, in 1925, the Chicago collector Annie Swan Coburn is said to have paid 100,000 dollars for it. Through her will, it later went to the Art Institute of Chicago.
The Maison Fournaise was a lively restaurant for people who enjoyed boating. Renoir had just finished 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' there, showing his friends having lunch. That painting is now in the Phillips Collection in Washington.
From about the age of 13, Renoir worked as an apprentice painting designs on porcelain. It is said that this is where he developed his bright, smooth colors and his skill at painting lovely flowers and faces.
