This sculpture shows a girl standing with her chin up, her hands behind her back and her chest out a little. The work in this photo is the original, made in wax by Degas's own hands. There is only one. She wears a real cloth bodice and tutu, and a wig of human hair tied with a silk ribbon. She is about one meter tall.
The model was Marie van Goethem, a Belgian girl studying at the Paris Opera Ballet school. Degas made many drawings of her. In 1881, he showed the sculpture in a glass case at the sixth Impressionist exhibition. A sculpture with real clothes and hair caused a sensation. One critic called it the first truly modern sculpture, but others criticized it harshly.
After Degas died, this wax figure and many other wax sculptures were found in his studio. From the 1920s, bronze copies were made. About 30 bronze casts are said to exist, in museums and private collections around the world. The American collector Paul Mellon bought the wax original in 1956, and it later came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Studies by the National Gallery of Art show that, besides a metal frame, the wax figure contains rope, wood and even old paintbrushes in the arms. Degas the painter used his own brushes to help build the sculpture.
Degas made many wax sculptures in his life, but this is the only one he ever showed in public. The others were made quietly in his studio and became known only after he died.
In 2009, a bronze cast of this sculpture sold at auction in London for about 13.3 million pounds. The wax original is a different, one-of-a-kind work.
At the 1881 exhibition, Degas displayed the figure in a glass case, like a specimen in a museum. Visitors were shocked by this and by the real clothes and hair. Some felt she looked like a doll.
