The painter who froze dancers in a single moment.

Degas was born in Paris into a rich banking family. He first studied the old masters closely. Then he turned to scenes of city life full of movement: ballet dancers, horse races and theaters. He showed his work at almost every Impressionist exhibition. But he preferred to build his pictures in the studio from memory and sketches, not outdoors. His bold, photo-like cropping is another trademark.
