A dance room in a theater that had burned down! Degas imagined this ballet class.
At the Paris Opera ballet school, girls in white tutus are taking an examination. The white-haired man leaning on a stick on the right is the famous ballet master Jules Perrot. A girl in the middle shows a pose, while others fix their ribbons or take a rest. Edgar Degas painted this in 1874.
In fact, this classroom is an imagined scene. The old Paris Opera building had burned down the year before, in 1873. Degas used his sketches to bring the girls and Perrot together in one room. The painting was ordered by the famous opera singer Jean-Baptiste Faure.
Faure lent this painting to the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, and he became a major collector of Impressionist art. A similar painting by Degas from the same time, The Ballet Class, is in the Musée d'Orsay. This work came to the Metropolitan Museum through a bequest in 1986.
Many girls are at a ballet class. They wear white skirts called tutus. An old teacher with a stick watches them. Some girls dance, and some girls rest. This room was not real. In 1873, while Degas was working on this painting, the building burned down!

The old Paris Opera that inspired this room burned down in 1873, while Degas was working on the commission. The examination is an imaginary scene made by combining sketches of different figures in one room.
Jules Perrot, leaning on his stick, was a star dancer when he was young. He also helped create the dances for the famous ballet Giselle. He was in his sixties when Degas painted him, and Degas sketched him many times.
